SAUNA ETIQUETTE

saunawelt brandmark cream logo.png

Do:

  • Shower with soap and water before your sauna experience to maintain the hygiene and cleanliness of the saunas

  • Wear proper swimwear

  • Always sit or lie with a towel beneath you - “No sweat on the wood”

  • Enter and exit the rooms quietly to avoid disrupting others and shut the door all the way to keep the heat inside

  • Be considerate by making room for others - choose a seat and posture that provides the most personal space for all occupants

  • Read the room when it comes to conversation.  Sauna is a great place to engage with others but respect bathers who prefer to refrain from interaction.  Use low voices, refrain from controversial topics, and do not use foul language.

  • Ask before creating “löyly” (low-loo) – the Finnish word for the steam created by pouring water on the rocks.  You need unanimous consent for this one and allow the person closest to the stove to create the löyly.

Don’t:

  • Wear makeup, lotions, or fragrances.

  • Distract fellow bathers with exercises or stretching – sit back, unwind, and relax.

  • Don’t heat and run – if you request “löyly,” you should stay in the sauna for at least a few minutes to enjoy the heat it just created.

  • Use electronics of any form.  Relax and enjoy the escape from the world.

  • Engage in PDA of any kind.

  • Comment on anyone's tattoos, piercings, or other body modifications.
